Juvenile Circular Spadefish
This spadefish will look very different as an adult, but as a juvenile, camouflage is the only way this this fish can survive on the a barren black sand bottom. How does a fish blend in when there is nothing but sand? The spadefish hides in plain sight by pulling off a remarkable mimicking act. From a distance, I dismissed this little fish as an orange leaf on the bottom of the ocean... not an uncommon sight in the tropics. Even upon close inspection, I still decided it was just a leaf. It didn't just look like a leaf, it swayed back and forth perfectly matching the surge and current, just as a real weightless leaf would. Then I notice that this "leaf" had a pair of eyes! Amazing.
