Barrel Sponge Reefscape
A large barrel sponge surrounded by feather stars reaches up from the sea floor on an Indonesian coral reef. A sponge of this size houses it's own micro-ecosystem. Feather stars attach to the outside, small sea cucumbers can be found both inside and out, worms burrow into the sponge, tiny fish like gobies and blennies dart around the surface of the sponge, and dozens of species of shrimp and crabs, including the beautiful hairy squat lobster, make their homes in sponges like this.
