Coastal Mountain Kingsnake
Lampropeltis zonata multifasciata
The Mountain Kingsnake is perhaps the most beautiful snake in the Western United States. At home among rocky outcroppings and riverine corridors (as pictured here) this reclusive snake can be somewhat difficult to find. The red, black, and yellow banding is classic aposematic coloration and is usually designed to mimic that of the venomous coral snake. Interestingly, coral snakes are not found in California, yet the mountain kingsnake is.
