A Sooty Shearwater takes flight on the open ocean. Sooty Shearwaters are among the champions of migrating animals. In the Pacific Ocean, many of these Shearwaters nest as far south as New Zealand, but migrate as far north as Japan, the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, and California. They have been known to cover distances in excess of 9,000 miles when migrating from south to north.
